Co-Founder, Retina Associates of South Texas
For more than three decades, Dr. Lina Marouf played a defining role in shaping retinal care in San Antonio. In 1996, she co-founded Retina Associates of South Texas, laying the foundation for what has become a renowned, trusted practice serving patients throughout San Antonio, Laredo, and the surrounding region. Her leadership, compassion, and vision helped transform the practice into a cornerstone of retinal care in South Texas.
Dr. Marouf began her career in San Antonio as a full-time clinical professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 1989. She received her medical degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and completed her ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Texas Tech University, training that set the stage for a lifetime of excellence in clinical care and education.
Dr. Marouf dedicated many years to national clinical research, including major trials in macular degeneration, intraocular tumors, and retinopathy of prematurity—an area especially close to her heart. Her work helped advance the field and solidified the reputation of Retina Associates of South Texas as a center of ophthalmic innovation.
Colleagues remember her as a pleasure to work with—gracious, steady, and endlessly supportive. Patients knew her as a source of comfort and clarity during their most vulnerable moments. And the community felt the impact of her outreach, educational efforts, and lifelong commitment to accessible, high-quality care. Much of the reputation Retina Associates of South Texas enjoys today is a direct reflection of her leadership and service.
After an extraordinary career, Dr. Marouf retired at the end of 2024, closing a remarkable chapter of dedication and achievement. She is now enjoying life post-retirement—traveling, exploring new experiences, and embracing the next phase of life with the same warmth and curiosity that defined her work.
Her legacy lives on in the countless patients she helped, the colleagues she guided, and the practice she helped build. Retina Associates of South Texas remains profoundly grateful for her vision, compassion, and enduring impact.
