Valeda Light Therapy: A New Treatment Option for Dry AMD
For decades, dry age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD) has had limited treatment options. Most patients have been managed through monitoring, AREDS-2 vitamin supplements when appropriate, and lifestyle guidance such as quitting smoking and protecting the eyes from sun exposure. These approaches matter — but until recently, there was little more we could offer.
That has begun to change.
What is Valeda?
Valeda is a newer, FDA-authorized treatment for certain patients with dry AMD. It is noninvasive and light-based — no injections, no surgery.
The treatment uses specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light, an approach called photobiomodulation. The goal is to help support the function of retinal cells that are stressed by the disease. Valeda is not a cure for dry AMD and does not reverse damage that has already occurred. In appropriate candidates, it may help support or maintain vision over time.
Advantages of Valeda
- Noninvasive — no surgery
- No injections
- Performed in the office during a regular visit
- Designed for certain patients with dry AMD
- May help support or maintain vision in appropriate candidates
Treatment involves a series of short sessions, and most patients find them comfortable.
Is Valeda right for me?
Not every patient with dry AMD is a candidate for Valeda. The decision depends on the stage of disease, what the retina looks like on imaging, and other factors specific to each patient. A retina specialist needs to review your exam and imaging before recommending treatment.
