Why Retina Associates of South Texas?
Retina Associates of South Texas opened in 1996, before the Spurs’ first championship and before the Pearl became the Pearl. Thirty years later, we remain an independent, physician-owned practice, now with five fellowship-trained retina specialists and offices in San Antonio, Laredo, and New Braunfels.
Choosing a retina specialist often means choosing a doctor you will see for years. We want you to know who is caring for you, understand your treatment, and feel comfortable asking questions.

Our Mission
To provide every patient with exceptional medical and surgical retina care, delivered compassionately, explained clearly, and available promptly across South Texas.
What we believe in
Five commitments guide how we practice. Select one to learn more.
Personal Care
- A physician who knows your history
- Time to understand your diagnosis and options
- Treatment decisions made together
Retinal conditions are often managed over years, not weeks. We keep you with the same physician throughout your care, so your doctor knows your history, follows changes in your scans, and understands how your condition affects your daily life.
We schedule our clinics to keep waiting to a minimum and to give each patient unhurried time with their doctor. At every visit, we show you what we see, explain what it means, and discuss your options before treatment begins. If something is unclear, please ask.
We treat patients as partners in their care, with the same respect we would expect for our own families.
Expertise
- Five fellowship-trained retina specialists
- Caring for retina patients in San Antonio since 1996
- Medical and surgical retina care in one practice
All five of our physicians have completed fellowship training in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. Their training includes Ochsner, Charles Retina Institute, The Retina Institute of St. Louis, and Washington University in St. Louis.
We care for patients with macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal tears and detachments, and other retinal conditions. Our physicians also have experience in pediatric retinal disease, retinopathy of prematurity, uveitis, and ocular tumors.
Our offices use imaging such as OCT, OCT angiography, and wide-field retinal photography to help diagnose disease and follow treatment.

- Participation in clinical trials
- Published research
- Teaching physicians in training
Our physicians participate in clinical trials, publish research, and teach physicians in training. This work keeps us close to new developments in retinal care.
For eligible patients, a clinical trial may offer access to an investigational treatment. We explain what participation involves, including the possible benefits, risks, and alternatives, so patients can decide whether a study is right for them.

- Independent of private equity and corporate ownership
- Founded in San Antonio in 1996
- Physicians who live and volunteer here
We are one of the largest retina-only groups in Texas that remain independent of private equity and corporate ownership. The practice is owned by its physicians, and the doctors seeing patients also make the decisions about how it operates.
Dr. Timothy Cleland and Dr. Lina Marouf founded the practice as a two-physician partnership, and their names have been familiar to patients and eye doctors in San Antonio ever since. We have grown into a group of five specialists and have remained independently owned and based here in South Texas.
Our physicians raise their families here and give their time to the community, including volunteer care for underserved patients through Haven for Hope and the iCare clinic.
Access
- A wide range of insurance plans accepted
- Help understanding costs and finding financial assistance
- Four offices across South Texas
- English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Vietnamese
Cost should not stand between a patient and the care they need. We accept a wide range of insurance plans, and our own staff handle insurance verification and billing. If you have questions about your coverage or the cost of treatment, our billing team will work with you to understand your options and identify financial assistance programs for which you may qualify.
We see patients at four offices: Northside San Antonio, Downtown San Antonio, Laredo, and New Braunfels. English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Vietnamese are spoken within our practice; let our scheduling team know your preferred language when arranging your visit.
Our own staff answer the phones and handle scheduling. When you call, you reach someone in our office, not a call center or an outside company. If you notice sudden flashes of light, a shower of new floaters, or a shadow or curtain over your vision, call us right away so we can arrange an urgent evaluation.

Referrals
For referring providers
We review referrals the same day they are received and schedule patients according to clinical need. For a patient who needs to be seen urgently, call our office so we can arrange a same-day evaluation.
We send a clinical summary after every visit. Calls from your office reach our staff directly. Including your mobile number with a referral also allows the treating physician to contact you directly about significant findings or treatment plans.
We provide your patient’s retinal care and coordinate with you throughout treatment. Patients continue to rely on your office for their ongoing eye care.
