For Referring Providers

Partnering with Referring Providers

Since 1996, Retina Associates of South Texas has provided medical and surgical retina care to patients throughout San Antonio, Laredo, New Braunfels, and the surrounding region. Our practice is built on long-term relationships, both with our patients and with the providers who refer them: optometrists, ophthalmologists, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinicians.

Every referral is reviewed the same day it is received and scheduled according to clinical need.

Urgent referrals

Please call our office rather than using the online form, and we will arrange for the patient to be seen the same day. Having the patient’s demographics, insurance, and reason for referral available will help us schedule quickly.

Our Approach

How We Work with Referring Providers

We believe retina care is best delivered through personal relationships. Our physicians know their patients, and they know the providers who refer them.

Direct communication with our physicians

Our physicians communicate with referring providers directly. When you submit a referral, please include a mobile number. Your patient’s retina specialist may text or call you with significant findings, surgical plans, or changes in treatment, and a written summary follows every visit.

The same physician at every visit

Each patient is followed by the same retina specialist from the first visit onward. Continuity allows our physicians to know each patient’s history in detail, and gives patients a consistent relationship with the doctor responsible for their care.

Your patient remains your patient

We provide the retinal care your patient needs and keep you informed throughout. When retinal care is complete or the condition is stable, patients return to you for their ongoing care.

Independent and physician-owned

Retina Associates of South Texas is independent of private equity and corporate ownership. Clinical decisions are made by the physicians caring for the patient, and the relationships we build with referring offices are maintained by those same physicians.

Clinical Research

Access to Advanced Therapies

Retina Associates of South Texas has participated in clinical trials for nearly three decades, including pivotal studies such as ANCHOR and HAWK that helped establish today’s standard of care for macular degeneration.

Our ongoing research, including trials of gene therapy, gives patients access to investigational treatments before they are widely available. Newly approved therapies are adopted into clinical practice as soon as they become available.

If you believe a patient may be a candidate for a clinical trial, please note this in your referral.
